Artist's Comments

My first shot at etching on clayboard…and I’m pleased enough with how it came out.
Doesn’t hurt that Tom Waits is my number one, all time, desert island favorite artist.

What's the process like, working on clayboard? I've never heard of it before, I've just begun working within printmaking within the past year. Wonderful print by the way.

It's much easier and faster than I thought it would be! Took maybe about 6 hours compared to the typical 15-30 other projects have taken, and I really liked it 'cause it's so easy to create punchy lighting. The boards you buy are covered in clay, which has then been coated in black India ink. It comes off with very light pressure...so you've gotta have a light touch. To get the original image, you just use any abrasive tool you can get your hands on. My favorites were a fiberglass brush and bit of steel wool, but pen nibs and wood working tools are cool too.

You can also overlay colour onto the board (with markers of something) once you're done scratching. Haven't tried that yet, but it seems straight forward enough.

Glad you like it!

I like the way it has strong blacks & strong whites. The lines look nice and soft, with just enough control to keep it looking like scribbles.

Good Job

I see you`re from canada. Did you do illustration and design at dawson college in qc by any chance?
Were doing clayboard now and I saw an example identical to this one, so Im just wondering if youre the same person.
